An unsolved homicide. Four investigations across sixty years, each closed for want of evidence: witnesses dead, specimens lost, leads exhausted. The file records a murder nobody was able to solve.
Below the surface — the record
Within 48 hours a fingerprint specialist destroyed evidence from the crime lab. Every physical specimen vanished from the LMPD property room. Her diary and two rolls of film were recovered and never analyzed. Evidence does not leave a property room at that rate by accident.
This was not an unsolvable case. This was a case managed to remain unsolved. The infrastructure that protected it was Louisville’s documented open city: 350+ bookies under police protection, organized crime operating through property held in the names of maids, postmen, widows and lawyers.
